We are seeking a full-time, senior communications engineer who will apply their expertise in communications systems, digital signal processing, implementation and real-world test, and information theory to the intersection of physical layer communications systems and machine learning.  A strong candidate will have significant experience working within the physical layer both in modeling and performance analysis, as well as software implementation and test in commercial or prototype systems, and will help bring a strong rigorous digital signal processing and communications perspective to our programs working to enhance portions of communications systems with machine learning based algorithms, looking beyond todays systems to ones which can adapt processing algorithms and encodings in and end-to-end fashion beyond the way we rigidly define these systems today, and to help train recognition systems which rapidly detect and survey activity in conventional communications networks using machine learning driven approaches.  We seek a candidate who is strongly familiar working with traditional signal processing techniques for synchronization, estimation, equalization, reception within OFDM physical layer system, LTE, 5G-NR, WiFi, or similar, and especially who have worked within existing production physical layer software stacks such as OAI, FlexRAN, Aerial SDK, or similar and would be comfortable integrating novel training and inference engine software throughout these stacks, generated data, simulating channel effects, measuring traditional communications performance metrics such as BER, EVM, FER and other metrics, along with a range of other tasks at the intersection of Comms and ML.

What You’ll be Doing:

  • Working on the intersection of state-of-the-art comms and machine learning systems, working to help identify opportunities and shortcomings in todays systems
  • Working with communications software such as OAI, FlexRAN, Aerial to help gather data, generate test integrations, and performance metrics and comparisons
  • Working with a small & fast-moving team which is working to digest machine learning research and development breakthroughs from industry and academia, and rapidly understand and apply breakthrough ideas cross-domain to impact the state of the art in the wireless signal processing world. 
  • Working with engineering and product development teams, customers, and field tests to validate, deploy, and scale new communications software capabilities. 
  • Working with product managers, business development, and engineering teams to help shape future products based on the art of what is possible, and build out prototypes, and work with engineering teams to help mature and ship commercial software products for key signal processing tasks in RF sensing, modem communications, and cellular 5G RAN systems.

What we need to see:

  • Strong knowledge and experience in wireless, communications and signal processing systems at both a theoretical and applied software and emulation level.
  • Keen interest in exploring, understanding, and validating where ML and data-driven methods can augment and improve performance in wireless systems
  • Experience working in Python, Jupyter Notebooks, CommPy/Matlab, GNU Radio, C++, and in performance optimization/SIMD, CUDA, and RF data visualization and diagnosis
  • Strong communications and teaming skills to work collaboratively and productively in a small company environment where we often wear multiple hats.
  • Publications or applied work on physical layer processing or algorithms in recent communications systems or applications.
  • Ideally M.S. or Ph.D. in Computer Science or Electrical/Computer Engineering, minimum B.S. or equivalent experience in these fields.
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States, some programs require that work authorization is via US citizenship to meet certain information processing and contract requirements.
